The Legend of The Four Thieves

The bubonic plague (Black Death) raged through Europe for hundreds of years. Killing millions of people, at one point it is said to have wiped out almost half of the population. It was seemingly impossible to be anywhere in the vicinity of the Plague, without great risk of becoming infected.

The Four Thieves were 15th Century brothers who robbed the dead and the bodies of the sick and dying. Protecting themselves with a powerful secret potion. The punishment for their crimes was death by burning and once captured, The four thieves bargained for a more lenient sentence by revealing their secret recipe.

Naturopaths, Aromatherapists, and Holistic health practitioners are increasingly familiar with the concoction that is said to have save the Thieves from pestilence is now commonly known as

The Four Thieves” recipe.

The Essential Oils used to create this blend have been heavily researched and proven to be effective to support immune system, to be antimicrobial, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory.

The four Thieves recipe can be readily adapted to suit you. For example, you might want fill your home with the amazing aroma of Pure therapeutic Lemon Essential oil, simple, just add a few extra drops of Lemon.

I have adapted The Four Thieves recipe by adding Red Thyme. This is an amazing Essential oil,

packed full of benefits which I have listed below the full recipe.

 

How to use.

There's a range of ways you can use Four Thieves Oil .Here's a few suggestions.

Inhalation.

On a tissue: 6 drops on a tissue, take 2 or 3 deep breaths. I then place the tissue in my shirt, so I continue to get the benefits of the oils and the tissue is readily available for me to inhale the oils again 10 minutes later.

Steamers: Please take care not to use too much! I'd suggest 1-2 drops, in a steam inhaler and use for 5 minutes. This is a great way to ease congestion and support respiratory system.

No Steam inhaler? Get a bowl of hot water, add 1-2 drops of Four Thieves Oil and inhale with a towel over your head.

Vapourisers & Diffusers. Probably the favourite way to enjoy Essential Oils. Add 10 -15 drops in your diffuser and use for 30 minute intervals. It can be really tempting to leave for longer, this could cause he air to become overloaded and cause a muzzy head or even headache. Trust me, less is very often more, with Essential Oils.

Bath. Add 6-8 drops diluted in an egg cup of milk. (This will help dilute the oils and stop the oils from sitting on the top of the water.) 6-8 drops are plenty, as the oils will be absorbed by the skin as well as inhaled through the steam. LET THE BATH WATER COOL TO THE RIGHT TEMPERATURE before climbing in to enjoy and relax for at least 15 minutes.

 

Topical application. Dilute 15-20 drops of The Four Thieves oil in approximately 50ml of your favourite base oil. My preferred oil is Apricot Kernel oil as it is readily absorbed and doesn't feel overly greasy. Apply to you wrists/pulse points, rub liberally on your chest or wherever you feel you would benefit.

 

Safety. Please use your oils safely. Sorry ladies; The Four Thieves Oil is not safe if you are pregnant or breast feeding. If you would like some further advice on this, please contact me. Better still, I will write a blog on Essential oils and pregnancy, some time in the future.

 

Recipe.

35-40 drops of Citrus Lemon Essential Oil

30 drops Clove Bud Essential Oil

20 drops Cinnamon Essential Oils

10 drops Eucalyptus Globulus. ( Use Eucalyptus Smithii for a milder effect)

Above is the recipe for the Legendary Four Thieves oil blend. I added

20 drops of Red Thyme to this blend.
